10 TECH ITEMS YOU NEED FOR YOUTUBE
Starting your YouTube channel comes with a lot of questions! One of the most common ones is what’s the best camera to buy for Youtube videos? Whether you plan on vlogging or filming content videos, a good camera will definitely make you feel more “profeshhional”.
Truth is it’s all trial and error but I’m here to hopefully make this process a tad bit easier by sharing my camera and filming supplies and equipment.
MY EQUIPMENT
CAMERAS
— For Vlogging: The Canon G7X is probably the most used / popular vlogging camera around right now.
It’s simple to use and the lighting adjusts beautifully in most places. The Canon G7X is also great for pictures too. If you’re starting off you could use this camera for vlogging and filming content videos too (meaning you sit in a “studio-like” area to film most videos). One thing I’ve noticed about this camera is that it auto focuses / adjusts quite a bit for filming sit down content videos. I’m sure there’s a way to adjust that (YouTube does wonders) just beware of what that clicking sound may be. It also has the adjustable “flip screen” which is probably the most important part of the camera so you can see yourself as you’re filming.
— For Content Videos: I love my Sony A5000.
My very first “YouTube camera” and I just love it. This camera also has the flip screen which is soo ideal for filming content videos. There is nothing worse than filming an entire video and later finding out that it was out of focus the entire time. With my Sony A5000 I rarely ever have this problem. One problem I do have is that it is known to overheat and it does. I can film for about 45 minutes straight before it starts to get hot so heads up for those who plan on using it for filming — you’re going to have to take a break. Other than that this camera takes beautiful pictures and allows you to also change lens — which is crucial for when you really start getting into filming. One las thing I don’t like about this camera is that it’s not the best at adjusting in night lighting but in daytime it’s amazing, especially with the face smoother ;)
Speaking of Lens: I use the Sony - FE 50mm F1.8 Standard Lens (SEL50F18F) to blur out the background and keep focus on me. It’s also great for up close product photos or portraits as well.
MEMORY CARD
— You need a memory card to record on the camera and also to transfer the files to the computer. 32 GB is what I would start with as a bare minimum. Yes you can get the 8GB or 16GB but I find that I run through those extremely quickly and it’s better to have extra space rather than running out when you’re right in the middle of your trip vlogging.
TRIPODS
— For Vlogging I like the Joby Gorillapod. I know it looks weird but it’s strong and super flexible and durable.
— For Content Videos I use the Sunpak - PlatinumPlus 5858D 58" Tripod - Black from BestBuy. It’s pretty sturdy and basic, easy to use.
LIGHTING
My only lighting right now is a ring light I purchased from a camera store in Pasadena, CA. Ring lights are great to use to uniform lighting throughout your videos and help give it a bit of a professional feel. I recommend the Neweer Ringlight from Amazon.
EDITTING
Editing on a Mac is faster and easier in my opinion than editing on a PC. I used to hate editing on my Macbook Air because of the storage space but I recently learned how to edit on an external hard drive and it is life changing. I love the ability to carry my laptop around in a lightweight and be able to edit wherever. I highly recommend getting a Macbook to edit. I also got an iMac and personally I still like my Macbook Air better. Macs also come with iMovie which is a pretty easy to use standard program to edit YouTube videos.
I hope this posts helped you figure out which cameras to by. Truth be told you can start filming and editing on your iPhone but if you want to up your equipment and quality I highly recommend investing in camera equipment.
Don’t have $500 to spend on a camera? No worries, I teach you how to sell your unused clothes to make profit in my ebook Get Rid of It.
Check it out if you could use a few dollars to get your Youtube dreams going.
Until next time my loves,
