8 Period Purse Essentials to Pack for Traveling On Your Menstrual Cycle

I've kind of mastered how to just still enjoy your period and your trip, and here’s everything you need for traveling on your period.

If you’ve been here before, you know I love to travel! In my few / many years of life I have come to find out that my period loves to hop on the plane and go with me on trips! I've been to Coachella on my period. I've been to Chicago on my period. I've been to Florida on my period. I've been to Costa Rica, Mexico.. pretty much anywhere I go (minus a couple of places) my period comes along with me. And surprisingly I've still had some really good times on these trips despite the cramps and despite the uncomfortableness sometimes of constantly having to change on the go.

This post is all about tips for traveling while on your period. If this has ever happened to you OR if you plan out your cycle and you see it's about to happen to you, keep reading. Traveling on your period can be pretty frightening, or upsetting. For some people it can completely ruin the trip but I'm going to give you some tips and tricks on how to make your trip so fun and still enjoy yourself (even though your period decided to come on your trip with you).

My #1 Tip

The best tip I can give you is to be prepared. When it comes to your period, you do not want surprises at any point in your trip that you are unprepared for. There have been so many disasters avoided because at the last second before I left, I went to Target just to get pads and tampons. There's been times where she (as in my period) has literally has snuck up on me at the airport so it's always good to be prepared in your carry-on bag and your checked bag but also the bag that you have on you.

Here’s What to Prep

(1) Your favorite tampons & pads

So personally I like to get this stuff when I'm at home because where I know exactly where I can go and get my faves. If you are going out of the country make sure that you pack ahead of time and pack enough. It is just a little bit more peace of mind.

(2) Wipes

Baby wipes or the ph balancing wipes will help out so much Because you never know if you're going to be out for a long day and you just really need to freshen up.

(3) Medicine

Advil for me is everything. It takes away my cramps so I always make sure that I pack Advil. When I was in costa rica I didn't pack Advil and I had to go and try to find the equivalent of Advil in a foreign country.. in a foreign language ..and it was just not okay. I vividly remember the cramps to this day so make sure you pack your medicine in advance as well!

(4) A Ton of Underwear

when I go on vacation, I kid you not: I pretty much pack my whole underwear drawer. You just never want to be without your own precious underwear. So yes pack plenty of underwear because you just never know what will happen.

(5) A Heating Pad

Personally I don’t use heating pads, BUT I hear it can work wonders for easing the pain in the moment.

(6) Tea

I love raspberry tea and peppermint tea for my period. If you can find a way to get ahead of your period and drink peppermint and raspberry tea before your period it really helps alleviate cramps and sometimes even bleeding.

(7) Comfortable Clothes

For me I cannot wear leggings or anything tight around my stomach when I’m on my period. It just makes my cramps 10 times worse! So something loose and comfortable (especially if you're going to be on the plane for a long time)

(8) Doggy bags

Make sure you pack some type of bag to wrap everything up in. Sometimes you think, “oh I'll wrap it in a paper towel or this”. No. Make sure you wrap or pack little doggy bags, little baby bags, ziploc bags, target bags, SOMETHING to wrap those bad boys up. Also do your best to make sure that you are getting the room cleaned every day. If you're not make sure you take the trash bag out yourself.

A friendly reminder to have fun

When I look back on the trips I taken, i remember myself having fun. It takes me a second to be like oh yeah I was on my period and then I laugh and I'm just like “man she comes with me everywhere!”. I also remember myself being overly and superly prepared and that's why I was able to still have fun.

I know there are some girls out there who probably feel like their vacation or their trip is going to be over because their period magically came but as long as you prepare, go with the flow, and stay hydrated it can really be a really fun experience! Do not let mother nature ruin your trip.

On the flip side guys there's always the mindset of being thankful that you are on your period and that your period did come this month. For whatever reason sometimes they don't come. Whether it's irregular, or other things that happen as well. So sometimes I just find myself at peace being like hello it is here my body is functioning the way it is supposed to be.
